Understanding Vaccines for Adults
Vaccines are often thought of as for kids because many important vaccines are given early in life, like measles, mumps, and polio. Vaccines teach your immune system to fight germs safely. They can protect you from mild sickness, like the flu, or serious illness, like pneumonia.
Your vaccine needs can change over time, depending on:
- Age
- Job or travel plans
- Medical conditions
- Life events (like pregnancy)
Vaccines have helped protect families for more than 200 years, starting with smallpox.
Peak Vista offers many common vaccines for adults. Your doctor or care team can help you figure out which vaccines you need and when to get them.

How Vaccines Protect You
Vaccines teach your body’s immune system to fight germs without making you very sick. When you get a vaccine, your body makes antibodies. These are special proteins that remember the germ and protect you if you meet it again.
Other ways vaccines help you:
- Lower your risk of serious illness or complications.
- Protect family, coworkers, and the community.
- Keep people safe who cannot get vaccines, like babies or people with weak immune systems.
- Help lower health care costs by preventing sickness.
Common Myths & Facts About Adult Vaccines
Many adults skip vaccines because of confusion or wrong information. Knowing the facts helps you make safe choices. Vaccines protect you, your family, coworkers, and your community.
- Myth: 'Vaccines are only for kids.'
Fact: Adults need vaccines too, including flu, COVID-19, Tdap, shingles, and more. - Myth: 'I don't need vaccines if I'm healthy.'
Fact: Even healthy adults can get serious infections; vaccines help prevent illness. - Myth: 'Vaccines cause the disease they protect against.'
Fact: Vaccines use weakened or inactive germs, so they cannot cause the disease.
Vaccines not only protect you, but also your family, coworkers, and community.
